US Treasury Rally Impacts Dollar and Gold Prices

US Treasury yields have declined significantly, leading to a broad weakening of the US dollar and a notable increase in gold prices. Following a rally in Treasuries, 10-year yields fell by 21 basis points from their recent highs, which were reached after the release of higher-than-expected inflation data. As a result, gold prices surged by approximately $40, benefiting from lower yields that reduce the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold. This market movement was also influenced by speculation that China may be holding more US government debt than previously reported, as indicated by a sharp increase in Canada’s reported holdings of US securities.

In the Asia-Pacific region, the Australian dollar was an exception to the trend, falling after the country reported a loss of 39,300 jobs in September, pushing the unemployment rate to a five-year high of 4.7%. This disappointing employment data has led traders to reconsider expectations for future interest rate hikes by the Reserve Bank of Australia. Meanwhile, central bank officials in both Japan and New Zealand indicated that they are open to raising rates, with Japan's Bank of Japan board member Junko Koeda suggesting that the bank should not be overly cautious about tightening monetary policy.

Oil prices also experienced a dip amid reports that the US government is contemplating easing sanctions on shadow fleet tankers to reduce record freight rates and enhance oil flows from the Gulf. This potential policy shift comes as high fuel prices pose a political risk for the US administration ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Overall, the financial markets are reacting to a complex interplay of economic data, central bank signals, and geopolitical developments.
