Markets Remain Steady Ahead of US Jobs Report

Global markets exhibited a cautious tone on October 2, 2026, as investors awaited the release of the US nonfarm payrolls report, which is anticipated to show an increase of approximately 90,000 jobs with the unemployment rate holding steady at 4.1%. The US dollar remained strong, nearing its highest level since May 2025, while the Australian and New Zealand dollars maintained their positions. Gold prices dipped to around $4,140 per ounce before recovering, and oil prices showed little movement after a surge above $100 on Thursday.

In Japan, inflation surged in September, with the core Consumer Price Index rising 2.7% year-on-year, surpassing the 2.4% forecast and marking the fastest increase in ten months. This uptick in inflation has strengthened the case for a potential rate hike by the Bank of Japan, with the next policy meeting scheduled for October 29-30. Japanese government officials indicated a shift away from excessively loose monetary policy, as Economy Minister Kiuchi stated that the country is no longer in deflation, while Finance Minister Katayama announced plans to streamline approximately 7 trillion yen in idle government funds.

In the Asia-Pacific region, trading activity was subdued, particularly as mainland China and India markets remained closed for holidays. Hong Kong reopened without Stock Connect flows, and New Zealand's consumer confidence slipped to 97.6 amid rising oil prices. Meanwhile, South Korea reported an 84% increase in exports year-on-year, although Asian currencies continue to be influenced by US yields and the dollar ahead of the payrolls data.
