US Dollar Reaches Highest Level Since May 2025 Ahead of Payrolls Report

The US dollar index climbed to approximately 102, marking its highest point since May 2025, as investors anticipated the upcoming nonfarm payrolls report. The report is expected to show an increase of around 90,000 jobs, with the unemployment rate remaining steady at 4.1%. This rise in the dollar comes despite recent softer inflation data that has tempered expectations for an interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve in October, although inflation remains above the target of 2%.

Initial jobless claims in the US fell to 197,000, and construction spending rose by 0.9% in August. The ISM manufacturing index showed a slight decline to 54.5 in September, indicating continued expansion, while the prices-paid component surged to nearly 78, reflecting persistent inflation pressures. These factors contribute to a resilient outlook for the US economy, which supports the dollar's strength.

In Asia, currencies have weakened against the dollar despite positive economic indicators. South Korea reported a significant 84% year-on-year increase in exports for September, surpassing expectations. Manufacturing PMIs in South Korea, Japan, and Vietnam remained in expansion territory, suggesting robust regional economic activity. However, the combination of high oil prices, a strong dollar, and rising US yields has tightened financial conditions across Asia, making external factors the primary influence on Asian currencies in the near term.
