Wall Street Economists Adjust Core PCE Forecasts Following CPI Data
Wall Street Slides as Treasury Yields Surge to 8-Month Peak
TLDR
- Major equity benchmarks declined Tuesday amid pressure from climbing bond yields and elevated energy prices
- Treasury yields surged, with the 10-year touching 4.75%—the highest intraday reading since January 2025
- Crude oil prices pushed above $92 following attacks on tankers near the Strait of Hormuz
- Technology shares led the decline, with the Nasdaq dropping nearly 0.9% on concerns over AI financing costs
- Economic data showed modest improvement in job openings while manufacturing growth continued but decelerated
Wall Street kicked off September with broad-based losses as surging Treasury yields, climbing crude prices, and mounting Middle East tensions combined to pressure risk assets.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined approximately 0.4%, shedding roughly 208 points. The S&P 500 retreated 0.5%, while the Nasdaq Composite tumbled close to 0.9%.

Bond Yields Rise to Multi-Year Highs
Treasury yields extended their advance Tuesday, with the benchmark 10-year note touching 4.75% intraday—marking its highest level since January 2025. The longer-dated 30-year bond yield climbed to 5.27%, approaching multi-decade peaks, before moderating slightly.
Rising yields increase financing costs across the economy. This development poses particular challenges for technology and artificial intelligence firms that have relied heavily on debt markets to finance ambitious capital expenditure programs.
Analysts at Citi noted that equity markets have never been more concentrated in AI-related investments, creating heightened vulnerability to bond market fluctuations.
Cross-asset strategist Nic Puckrin declared the “summer party for risk assets is over” and cautioned investors to “prepare for a sell-off, especially in long-duration equities like tech and AI.”
Oil Prices Add to Market Pressure
Brent crude futures climbed above $92 per barrel Tuesday after two petroleum tankers were reportedly attacked while navigating out of the Strait of Hormuz, according to Bloomberg. The incidents heightened concerns about potential escalation in the US-Iran standoff.
Rising oil prices compound inflation anxieties, potentially reinforcing expectations that the Federal Reserve might implement additional interest rate increases.
Technology stocks bore the brunt of Tuesday’s selloff, with the sector declining 1%. CrowdStrike, Lumentum, and Palo Alto Networks ranked among the S&P 500’s biggest losers.
Equities entered September with solid double-digit gains year-to-date alongside improving earnings forecasts. However, September has historically been the calendar’s weakest month for stocks, and this year brings compounded risk factors.
On the economic calendar, the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey revealed a marginal increase in July job vacancies. Manufacturing activity maintained its expansion streak for an eighth consecutive month, although momentum showed signs of moderating.
Upcoming earnings reports from Dell and Palo Alto Networks are anticipated to provide insights into corporate technology and cloud infrastructure spending patterns.
The Nasdaq finished Tuesday’s session down 233 points. The S&P 500 declined approximately 40 points. The Dow surrendered just over 200 points.
