Wednesday Market Watch: Nvidia (NVDA) Earnings Anticipation, Software Sector Tumbles, and Crypto Retreat
Quick Summary
- Nvidia (NVDA) stock ticked higher in early trading as market participants prepared for its crucial after-hours earnings release
- Intuit plummeted approximately 12% following disappointing revenue projections for its 2027 fiscal year
- Technology software names experienced widespread declines, including ServiceNow, Adobe, Salesforce, and Palantir
- Bitcoin retreated to approximately $78,500 after reaching peaks near $81,000, pulling cryptocurrency-related equities down
- Biohaven skyrocketed 13% on news of a licensing partnership with SK Biopharmaceuticals valued at up to $795 million
Trading sessions commenced tentatively on Wednesday as market participants positioned themselves for Nvidia’s highly anticipated quarterly financial disclosure, scheduled for release following the market close. The report is considered pivotal in determining the trajectory of AI-focused investment strategies.
Nvidia equity advanced 0.3% during pre-market hours after recording a 2.2% gain in the prior session, thereby snapping a seven-session losing run. Intel and Broadcom similarly moved higher, though semiconductor stocks generally maintained a wait-and-see stance before the earnings announcement.
Software Sector Faces Broad Pressure
The enterprise software space encountered significant headwinds at the market open. Intuit tumbled nearly 12% despite surpassing quarterly profit expectations, as the company delivered revenue projections that substantially underperformed Wall Street’s estimates.
Management projected fiscal year 2027 revenue ranging from $23.28 billion to $23.51 billion, missing the analyst consensus of $23.7 billion. The company also provided non-GAAP EPS guidance of $22.68 to $23.12, significantly below the $27.30 consensus.
Chief Executive Sasan Goodarzi emphasized the company’s strategic priority of capturing greater market share within the increasingly competitive AI-driven software landscape.
ServiceNow, Adobe, and Atlassian each declined more than 2%. Salesforce retreated 1.6% in advance of its own quarterly report scheduled for after-hours release. Palantir shed 1.2%.
SAP tumbled nearly 5% following a UBS downgrade from buy to neutral. The firm’s analysts pointed to sluggish advancement in deploying AI products to enterprise customers, suggesting this could incentivize companies to develop proprietary AI capabilities instead.
nCino declined 4% after delivering revenue guidance that disappointed market expectations. Zoom dropped more than 5% even after exceeding analyst projections, partially attributed to management’s silence regarding the current valuation of its Anthropic investment.
Cryptocurrency Weakness Spreads to Related Stocks
Bitcoin retreated to approximately $78,500 after testing levels near $81,000 earlier this week. The digital asset’s decline pressured cryptocurrency-exposed equities.
Strategy declined 1.7%, while Coinbase Global and Robinhood Markets each fell 1.4%.
Notable Gainers Stand Out
Several stocks bucked the broader weakness. Biohaven soared 13% following the announcement of a worldwide licensing arrangement with SK Biopharmaceuticals. The deal structure includes initial and milestone compensation totaling up to $795 million, alongside tiered royalty payments ranging from the mid-teens to low twenties percentage on domestic net revenue.
Semtech climbed 3.2% after delivering second-quarter revenue of $341.9 million, representing a 32.7% year-over-year increase, with both results and forward guidance exceeding analyst expectations.
HEICO advanced 2.5% following its disclosure of record quarterly revenue reaching $1.41 billion, up 23% compared to the prior-year period, surpassing the analyst consensus of $1.35 billion.
Summit Therapeutics gained 5.5% after collaboration partner Akeso disclosed favorable Phase III clinical trial outcomes for an oncology treatment combining ivonescimab with standard chemotherapy protocols.
Spyre Therapeutics dropped 12% following inconclusive Phase 2 trial data on its rheumatoid arthritis drug candidate, which showed the lower dosage achieved the primary efficacy endpoint while the higher dosage failed to meet objectives.
Market attention remains squarely focused on Nvidia’s after-hours earnings release, alongside quarterly reports from Salesforce, Okta, CrowdStrike, and Nutanix.
