Anthropic builds its own version control system to replace git, merging over 30,000 code changes daily

PANews reported on October 14 that Anthropic announced in a post on its engineering blog that the company has built its own version control system, Scion, and spent five months fully migrating its code monorepo off git. Anthropic said its daily merged code changes grew from about 2,500 in May this year to more than 30,000 in September, and that its original development infrastructure, designed for human rather than AI agent scale, had become a bottleneck. According to the introduction, Scion was developed by a seven-person team, and its infrastructure uses about 200 times less CPU and memory than the previous git mirroring solution, while the time to pull code for CI and research tasks dropped from several minutes to a few seconds. Anthropic said Scion is not a general-purpose git replacement and is currently only sharing its design ideas.
