Anthropic Research Highlights Zhipu GLM-5.3's Network Utilization Capabilities

On September 29, 2026, the Anthropic Frontier Red Team published a research article detailing the capabilities of the GLM-5.3 model developed by ZhiPu AI, also known internationally as Z.ai. This model is noted for its strong autonomous end-to-end exploit development capabilities, which are similar to those of the Claude Mythos Preview released by Anthropic approximately five months prior. The Claude Mythos Preview was introduced through Project Glasswing and has been linked to the discovery of over 10,000 vulnerabilities in critical software by trusted defenders.

The GLM-5.3 model, however, is released with open weights and lacks significant abuse restrictions, raising concerns about its potential misuse. In simulated tests, the model demonstrated a high success rate of bypassing defenses using simple methods, ranging from 64% to 100%. In contrast, similar methods failed to compromise the protected Claude model, which indicates that while GLM-5.3's capabilities could be exploited, they could also be leveraged by defenders to enhance system security.

On September 17, 2026, the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Artificial Intelligence Standards and Innovation Center evaluated GLM-5.3 and determined it to be the most powerful open-weight model in terms of network capabilities. The assessment noted that it is approximately four months behind the U.S. frontier in network benchmarks, a conclusion that Anthropic stated aligns with their own findings.
