Bitget Resumes Withdrawals After $388 Million Security Breach

Bitget, a prominent centralized cryptocurrency exchange, has reopened withdrawals for its users following a significant security breach that occurred on September 24, resulting in the loss of approximately $388 million from its operational wallets. The exchange's total reserves have decreased to around $5.7 billion, with nearly $463 million withdrawn by customers within the first 24 hours of the resumption of withdrawals.

The breach exploited a zero-day vulnerability in a third-party security application, allowing attackers to spoof transactions by accessing internal credentials. Bitget suspended withdrawals immediately upon detecting the breach but continued to allow trading and deposits. Withdrawals for Bitcoin resumed on September 28, followed by Ethereum on September 29, and USDT on September 30, with plans to restore other assets by October 2.

To reassure users, CEO Gracy Chen announced that the exchange would cover all losses through its User Protection Fund, which had a pre-incident value of over $464 million. This fund was specifically established for such emergencies and is sufficient to cover the theft while maintaining some reserves. However, the rapid customer outflows indicate a significant loss of trust, with a total balance decline of about $600 million since the breach.

Bitget has engaged cybersecurity firms Mandiant and SlowMist to investigate the incident, with initial findings suggesting potential links to North Korean hacking groups. The breach raises concerns about supply-chain security standards in the cryptocurrency sector, highlighting vulnerabilities that regulatory frameworks have yet to address. If Bitget can restore full withdrawal functionality by the scheduled date and demonstrate the effectiveness of its protection fund, it may have a path to regain user confidence.
