Coinbase Files to Launch Single Stock Perpetual Futures in the US

Coinbase has submitted registration notices to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to introduce single stock perpetual futures, a financial product that has not previously existed in the U.S. market. The filings, made on September 1 through Coinbase Derivatives and Coinbase Financial Markets, aim to integrate traditional stock trading with the continuous trading model of cryptocurrency markets. The announcement was made on X on September 3, leading to a roughly 10% increase in Coinbase's shares.

Perpetual futures allow traders to take leveraged positions on assets without owning them, providing the ability to bet on stock price movements around the clock. Unlike traditional futures contracts, these do not have an expiration date, enabling continuous trading. Coinbase has already successfully launched similar products for international customers, offering perpetual futures on major companies like Apple and Microsoft since March 20, with leverage options of up to 10 times.

For the U.S. launch, Coinbase has not yet revealed which stocks will be included or the specific leverage limits. The next step involves obtaining approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), as security futures in the U.S. are regulated by both the SEC and CFTC. This dual-regulatory framework has historically slowed innovation in this sector. Coinbase's move to introduce single stock perpetual futures is seen as a natural progression of its existing derivatives offerings, which already include U.S.-regulated perpetual-style equity index futures.
