Tether Freezes $550 Million in USDT Linked to Iranian Sanctions

Tether, the issuer of the stablecoin USDT, announced on September 28, 2026, that it has frozen approximately $550 million in USDT associated with wallets identified by U.S. authorities as linked to the Central Bank of Iran and its sanctions network. This action is part of Tether's ongoing cooperation with U.S. and international law enforcement, which has supported over 2,900 investigations globally, including more than 1,600 involving U.S. agencies.

In April 2026, Tether froze over $344 million USDT across two addresses after receiving information from the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). These addresses were subsequently listed by OFAC as digital currency identifiers for the Central Bank of Iran, with ties to the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Hezbollah. In July 2026, the Treasury expanded its sanctions to include four additional TRON addresses, resulting in the freezing of over $130 million USDT across these wallets.

Tether's CEO, Paolo Ardoino, emphasized that USDT is not a refuge for sanctioned individuals, terrorist organizations, or criminal networks. He noted that the transparency of public blockchains allows authorities to track fund flows, enabling Tether to act upon credible information provided by law enforcement. The company collaborates with over 340 law enforcement agencies across 67 countries, ensuring its wallet freezing policy aligns with the OFAC Specially Designated Nationals list.
