Polymarket Implements Responsible Gambling Features Amid Regulatory Scrutiny

Polymarket, a cryptocurrency-based prediction market platform, has introduced new responsible gambling tools, including non-revocable deposit limits and self-exclusion options, in response to increasing regulatory pressure. The platform has partnered with Birches Health, a mental health provider specializing in gambling addiction treatment, to enhance user safety. These features were launched on September 30, 2026, as Polymarket shifts its focus from political betting to sports and multi-leg parlays, which accounted for over 98% of its trading volume in September.

The introduction of these safety measures comes as Polymarket faces a lawsuit from New York state, which seeks to enforce gambling regulations against the platform. This legal challenge raises questions about the jurisdictional classification of prediction markets, as Polymarket operates under the oversight of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). However, New York regulators argue that the platform's operations resemble those of a sportsbook, which would subject it to stricter state regulations, including licensing and consumer protection mandates.

Polymarket's Global Head of Safety, Malea Otranto, stated that the company will monitor user interactions with the new tools and make adjustments as necessary. The platform's proactive approach aims to protect users from compulsive gambling behaviors while also serving as a defense in the ongoing legal battle with New York regulators. Whether these measures will satisfy the state's demands remains uncertain, as the core issue revolves around the regulatory classification of platforms that operate similarly to traditional sportsbooks.
