Cardano Foundation and Petrobras Collaborate on Blockchain Fuel Applications

The Cardano Foundation has announced an expanded partnership with Brazilian state oil company Petrobras, focusing on blockchain applications for sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. This collaboration marks a significant evolution from an initial employee education program to the development of tokenized supply chains aimed at enhancing traceability and combating greenwashing in Brazil's energy sector.

The partnership began in December 2023 with the launch of a blockchain education initiative for Petrobras' approximately 40,000 employees, where the first 500 participants received evolving non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as credentials. By 2025, the Cardano Foundation formalized its collaboration with PUC-Rio, a prominent Brazilian research university, to create practical blockchain solutions for the renewable fuel industry, particularly focusing on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Petrobras commenced its first commercial deliveries of domestically produced SAF in December 2025, with plans to meet 100% of Brazil's domestic SAF demand by 2027 to 2029.

The blockchain applications include a system for tokenizing the SAF supply chain, which will provide verifiable records of the fuel's origin and processing. Additionally, a decentralized application (dApp) is being developed to incentivize airline passengers who choose SAF-powered flights. As of November 2025, the project was actively progressing, with mechanisms being designed to promote consumer engagement in sustainable fuel adoption. Furthermore, the partnership has introduced a Proof of Atenas system for employee training verification, utilizing NFC cards and 3D-printed totems to maintain immutable on-chain attendance records, with discussions for broader implementation ongoing into 2026.

This collaboration is significant for Cardano, as it represents the foundation's first governmental partnership in Latin America, given Petrobras' majority state ownership. The initiative underscores the potential of blockchain technology in enhancing transparency and sustainability within the energy sector in Brazil.
