Trump Is Considering Former SEC Chair Jay Clayton for an AI Adviser Role

• Donald Trump is considering Jay Clayton for the role of the White House’s new AI adviser.

U.S. President Donald Trump is considering Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton as a candidate for the role of the White House adviser on artificial intelligence. Axios reported this. 

Asked about Clayton’s possible appointment, Trump called him “a good man” and said he could see him in the role. At the same time, the president said he already has someone in mind and intends to decide on the appointment within three to four days. No final decision has been made yet.

Clayton took over as head of U.S. National Intelligence in August 2026. Previously, he led the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and also served as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. 

During Senate hearings in July, Clayton described AI as both an opportunity and a threat, stressing the need to account for both sides of the technology.

The exact powers of the new adviser have not yet been defined. Earlier, Trump also announced the creation of an AI Force structure that would handle artificial intelligence development at the federal level. The White House has not yet disclosed details of its setup or authority.

The previous White House adviser on AI and cryptocurrencies was David Sacks. In March 2026, he left the role after completing his term as a special government employee and became co-chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). 

PCAST was created by a Trump executive order in January 2025. The council advises the president on science, technology, and innovation issues, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and other critical areas. It can include up to 24 representatives from government, the scientific community, and the technology industry.
