Solana's DeFi Total Value Locked Surges to $6.5 Billion Following Recovery from Major Hack

Solana's decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem has seen its total value locked (TVL) rebound to over $6.5 billion, a significant recovery from the $285 million loss incurred during a major exploit of the Drift Protocol earlier this year. The recovery, which marks a 38% increase in just two months, has been driven by a surge in the price of Solana's native token, SOL, and a strategic recovery plan that included a $127.5 million commitment from Tether, a prominent stablecoin issuer.

The exploit occurred on April 1, 2026, when hackers, linked to North Korean cyber actors, manipulated admin privileges to drain funds from Drift Protocol. This attack exploited a social engineering scheme rather than a flaw in the smart contracts, resulting in a loss that represented nearly half of Drift's TVL, which had exceeded $550 million prior to the incident. The immediate aftermath saw a significant drop in TVL across the Solana ecosystem as users withdrew their funds in response to the breach.

In the wake of the attack, Tether and other partners pledged nearly $150 million to a recovery fund aimed at compensating affected users through recovery tokens, which provide a claim on future protocol revenues. This innovative approach allows for a gradual compensation process rather than requiring immediate payouts, which many protocols are unable to sustain. Additionally, Drift Protocol has since rebranded as Velocity DEX, focusing on perpetual contract trading and enhancing its security measures to prevent future vulnerabilities.

The price of SOL has also played a crucial role in the recovery, rising from approximately $73 to $118, a 63% increase that has contributed to the inflated dollar-denominated TVL across Solana-based protocols. However, this price increase suggests that the actual amount of SOL locked in DeFi may have slightly declined. The Drift hack underscores the ongoing vulnerabilities in decentralized systems, particularly those with concentrated governance structures, and sets a precedent for the use of recovery tokens in the industry.
