Coinbase Expands Crypto-Backed Loan Offerings to Include HYPE and ZEC

Coinbase has announced the inclusion of Hyperliquid (HYPE) and Zcash (ZEC) as collateral options for its crypto-backed loans, allowing users to borrow up to $100,000 in USDC without selling their holdings. This feature is available to eligible users in the United States, excluding New York, through the Coinbase app. The expansion reflects Coinbase's ongoing strategy to broaden its lending product, which already supports various cryptocurrencies such as XRP, DOGE, ADA, and LTC.

The lending infrastructure operates on Morpho, an on-chain lending protocol that facilitates the mechanics of collateralized loans. Users can pledge their HYPE or ZEC tokens, with a maximum loan-to-value ratio set at 49%. For example, posting $10,000 worth of HYPE allows a user to borrow approximately $4,900. If the value of the collateral decreases significantly, reaching a liquidation threshold of 62.5%, the position may be liquidated to cover the loan.

In a related development, Coinbase recently launched wrapped versions of HYPE and ZEC, known as cbHYPE and cbZEC, on its Ethereum Layer 2 network, Base. These wrapped assets enable easier integration into decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, allowing users to engage with lending markets and liquidity pools without direct interaction with the native chains of these tokens. Since its inception, Coinbase's lending product has facilitated between $1.9 billion and $3 billion in USDC loan originations, highlighting its growing role in the cryptocurrency lending landscape.
