Dell Loses 18% in a Week as Barclays Shakes AI Optimism

Dell Technologies shares fell approximately 17% in two days after Barclays downgraded the stock on Oct. 14. Shares closed at roughly $507.93 on the day of the downgrade, an 11.6% decline, and closed at $473.39 on Oct. 15, leaving the stock nearly 20% below its mid-September record closing price, Investing Live reported.Barclays analyst Tim Long cut Dell from Overweight to Equal Weight and lowered his price target from $603 to $574, arguing that the company's booming revenue owes more to rising memory chip prices than to a genuine pickup in enterprise AI spending, Investing Live reported. The stock had gained more than 300% in 2026 before the call.

Barclays Questions The AI Spending Inflection Point

Long flagged two concerns in the downgrade. The first is valuation, which he described as stretched after Dell's sharp run-up this year. The second is the timing of enterprise AI spending, with Barclays arguing that businesses allocate an average of only 5% of their information technology (IT) budgets to AI and that roughly a quarter of corporate AI spending goes toward hardware. The bank found that the global memory shortage has allowed infrastructure companies to pass higher costs on to customers, inflating revenue growth in a way that could reverse if memory prices stabilize or decline. Dell's most recent quarter showed revenue rising 58% year over year to $47 billion, with earnings per share jumping 203% to $7.04, but Barclays contended that the headline numbers overstate the durability of the growth trend.A day before the downgrade, Chief Executive Michael Dell told an audience that enterprise AI demand was only beginning and that demand for AI computing still exceeded supply. The contrast between management's bullish messaging and the analyst's caution contributed to the severity of the selloff.

Barclays Cut Three Companies; AI Hardware Names Lost An Estimated $80 Billion

Barclays also downgraded Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and NetApp to Hold-equivalent ratings using the same rationale around growth sustainability and valuation, according to multiple reports.HPE shares fell as much as 7% during Oct. 15 trading, while Super Micro Computer also fell as much as 7% during the session. CoreWeave fell about 15% on Oct. 14, the same day as Dell, as its bond yields briefly climbed above 15%.AI-linked names collectively lost an estimated $80 billion in market value during the Oct. 14 trading session, with losses affecting Dell-adjacent companies including Oracle, CoreWeave and Nebius, according to Crypto Briefing. The selloff coincided with a hot Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for September, which added broader pressure to risk assets. The Nasdaq 100 also retreated during the same period.

Dell's AI Backlog Tells A Different Story From The Price Chart

The question facing investors is whether the selloff has priced in a slowdown that the order data does not yet support. Dell reported a record $60.9 billion in AI orders last quarter, with an AI server backlog of $95 billion. The company raised its full-year revenue guidance to $192 billion, suggesting management sees sustained demand beyond the current memory price cycle.Barclays' argument does not dispute that AI demand exists. The note instead questions whether hardware revenue can sustain current growth rates once memory prices normalize, and whether valuations that reflected a multi-year infrastructure buildout were vulnerable to any hesitation in enterprise spending. Dell's Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clarke acknowledged that inflation plays a role in the company's revenue growth, stating, "There's a notion of inflation inside our growth."Wall Street consensus remains broadly positive on Dell despite the downgrade, with a Moderate Buy rating and an average price target near $598, according to analyst surveys. The gap between the consensus target and the post-selloff trading price suggests most analysts view the decline as an overreaction.Dell's next quarterly earnings report, due in November, is the nearest catalyst. The results will show whether AI order growth continued or whether the enterprise spending hesitation Barclays flagged has begun appearing in the backlog data. Memory pricing trends through the fourth quarter will also test the central thesis behind the downgrade.
