European Banking Authority Recognizes USDC as First Significant Electronic Currency Token

The European Banking Authority (EBA) has officially recognized the US dollar stablecoin USDC as the first significant electronic money token within the European Union. This designation marks a notable development in the regulatory landscape for digital currencies in the region.

Effective November 12, the EBA will assume financial regulatory responsibilities for USDC, reflecting the growing importance of stablecoins in the financial ecosystem. This move is expected to enhance oversight and provide a clearer framework for the use of electronic currencies in the EU.

Despite this transition, the French Prudential Supervision and Resolution Authority will maintain its role in overseeing the governance and corporate affairs related to USDC, ensuring a dual-layered regulatory approach as the digital currency landscape evolves.
