Bitcoin Drops Below $82,000 Amid Rising US Inflation Concerns
Bitcoin's price fell below $82,000 on October 14, 2026, reaching a low of $81,500 following the release of higher-than-expected inflation data in the United States. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 3.7% in September compared to the previous year, surpassing economists' predictions of 3.6% and up from 3.4% in August. Monthly inflation rose by 0.6%, aligning with forecasts, while core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices, rose by 0.3%, exceeding the anticipated 0.2%.
The inflation report has led traders to adjust their expectations regarding monetary policy, with the CME FedWatch probabilities indicating a 41.5% chance of a 25 basis point interest rate hike at the Federal Reserve's upcoming meeting in October, a significant increase from 22% the previous day. For December, the likelihood of rates reaching between 4.25% and 4.5% is estimated at 36%, suggesting a strong possibility of at least one additional rate hike by the end of the year.
The selloff in Bitcoin triggered over $250 million in long liquidations across the cryptocurrency market, with more than $208 million occurring within a four-hour period, according to data from CoinGlass. The broader cryptocurrency market experienced a decline of nearly 2%, bringing its total capitalization close to $2.75 trillion. Major cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum and XRP also fell, with Ethereum trading below $2,450 and XRP dropping under $1.33, as investor sentiment remained cautious amid inflation concerns.
