$218 Million in Long Crypto Positions Liquidated in Four Hours

On October 14, 2026, a significant wave of forced selling impacted leveraged traders in the cryptocurrency market, resulting in the liquidation of $218 million in long positions within just four hours. This event occurred amid a concentrated period of selling pressure in futures markets, with total liquidations during this timeframe estimated at approximately $228 million, of which around $211 million, or 92%, were long positions.

Bitcoin and Ethereum, the two largest cryptocurrencies, experienced the most substantial losses. During the liquidation event, Bitcoin's price fluctuated between $82,000 and $83,000, while Ethereum traded between $2,400 and $2,430. Liquidations for Bitcoin were reported to be between $23 million and $26 million, with Ethereum following closely behind at between $21 million and $25 million.

The majority of these liquidations occurred on major exchanges, with Binance, Bybit, and Bitget seeing significant activity. Binance alone accounted for approximately 65% of the total liquidations, consistent with its historical share of liquidation volume across platforms. This pattern of forced selling is indicative of a crowded trade, as evidenced by the high percentage of long positions being liquidated.

This incident is part of a broader trend observed in October 2026, which has already seen multiple instances of similar long liquidations exceeding $200 million in both four-hour and 24-hour periods. The concentration of liquidations on Binance highlights the exchange's critical role in the dynamics of the crypto market, particularly during periods of heightened volatility.
