Google's Willow Chip Achieves Significant Error Reduction in Quantum Computing

The Google Quantum AI team has announced a breakthrough in quantum computing with the Willow processor, achieving a reduction in magical state errors by approximately 40 times. This advancement, detailed in a paper published in the journal Science, enhances logical fidelity to 99.99% for T states, which are essential for executing quantum programs.

Magic states are critical resources in quantum computing, often consuming up to 95% of a quantum computer's total capacity. The previous method for producing these states, known as magic state distillation, required extensive qubit resources. In contrast, Google's new technique, proposed in 2024, utilizes a more efficient cultivation approach. This method filters rough magic states, retaining only those that pass a series of stringent checks, although only about 8% of attempts are successful.

This cultivation technology supports estimates that suggest RSA-2048 encryption could potentially be broken with fewer than one million noisy qubits, a significant decrease from the previous estimate of 20 million in 2019. The experiments conducted on the Willow chip utilized 54 of its 105 qubits, with the paper highlighting that breaking the RSA-2048 key necessitates magic states with an error rate of approximately one in ten billion, indicating a need for even cleaner results than currently achieved.
