ICBC President Highlights Importance of Credit Support in Digital Currency Development

Liu Jun, President of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), emphasized the critical role of credit support and responsibility in the evolution of digital currency during the first Digital Renminbi Annual Conference at the 2026 Financial Street Forum Annual Meeting. He noted that while digital technology facilitates the growth of the digital economy, it also alters the traditional currency trust mechanism.

Liu explained that the integration of data, algorithms, and programmability is reshaping how credit is generated and transmitted. He argued that trust in currency is transitioning from being solely reliant on institutional frameworks to a model that combines institutional and technological support. However, he cautioned that technology should enhance trust rather than replace it.

The ICBC President further stated that the viability of digital currency hinges not just on algorithmic design but on the effective support of credit and the implementation of responsibility. He highlighted a shift from physical currency to digital forms, indicating a move towards synchronous payment and settlement processes, which contrasts with the traditional multi-step clearing that involves accounts and intermediaries. Despite these changes, Liu affirmed that the fundamental attributes of currency—serving as a medium of exchange, a store of value, and a unit of account—remain unchanged.
