JPMorgan Forecasts Bitcoin to Outperform US Stocks, Gold…
J.P. Morgan Asset Management expects Bitcoin to deliver higher annualized returns than US equities, gold and real estate over the next decade, according to its 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions released on October 19, 2026. The investment manager projects a 10% annualized compound return for Bitcoin over a 10- to 15-year horizon, compared with 7.5% for US large-cap equities, 8.2% for US real estate investment trusts and 5.5% for gold. The report marks the first time JPMorgan has introduced explicit long-term return scenarios for Bitcoin in its annual capital market assumptions, now in their 31st edition. However, the firm stopped short of recommending Bitcoin as a standard portfolio allocation, emphasizing its speculative characteristics and unusually high volatility. The forecasts reflect modeled expectations rather than guaranteed investment outcomes and could change substantially with market conditions, regulation and cryptocurrency adoption.
Bitcoin's Projected Returns Exceed Traditional Assets
JPMorgan's 10% base-case forecast places Bitcoin 2.5 percentage points ahead of US large-cap stocks and 4.5 percentage points above gold annually. The projection also exceeds expected returns of 7.7% for US small-cap equities and 8.1% for US core real estate. The distinction between real estate investment trusts and directly held property matters because the two investment categories have different liquidity, valuation and income characteristics. JPMorgan's Bitcoin scenarios nevertheless cover a considerably wider range of outcomes than conventional asset forecasts. Its bearish scenario projects an annualized loss of 9.7%, while the bullish scenario anticipates annualized gains of 17%. Over ten years, a hypothetical $10,000 investment compounding at the base-case rate would grow to approximately $25,937 before fees and taxes. At the bearish rate, the same investment would decline to roughly $3,605. These calculations illustrate the sensitivity of long-term outcomes to annualized returns rather than specific Bitcoin price targets. JPMorgan estimates Bitcoin's annualized volatility at approximately 55%, compared with around 18% for US large-cap equities and 17.2% for gold. Consequently, its higher expected return comes with substantially greater modeled investment risk.JPMorgan Remains Cautious About Bitcoin's Portfolio Role
Despite the favorable base-case projection, JPMorgan does not include Bitcoin in its recommended strategic asset allocations. The firm argues that Bitcoin's changing correlations with traditional financial assets complicate its use as a reliable portfolio diversifier. Unlike equities, which can be valued against earnings and cash flows, Bitcoin lacks conventional income-based valuation metrics. Its long-term performance therefore depends heavily on adoption, liquidity, regulation and broader monetary conditions. JPMorgan's digital asset researchers characterize Bitcoin primarily as a speculative investment and potential hedge against monetary expansion, rather than a consistent substitute for gold. The broader report projects a 7% annualized return for a traditional portfolio containing 60% equities and 40% bonds. Adding a 30% allocation to alternative investments could increase expected returns to approximately 7.5%, according to the firm's modeling. JPMorgan also raised its US large-cap equity forecast from 6.7% to 7.5%, citing stronger corporate profitability and productivity improvements associated with artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, its global aggregate bond return assumption reached 5.3%, reflecting higher real yields. The inclusion of Bitcoin alongside these established asset classes signals growing institutional interest in assessing cryptocurrency through conventional investment frameworks. However, the bank's analysis distinguishes expected returns from suitability for long-term portfolio construction. For investors, the report presents Bitcoin as an asset with potentially higher returns but significantly greater uncertainty. Its central implication is not that Bitcoin will necessarily outperform traditional investments, but that JPMorgan now considers the cryptocurrency sufficiently established to model its long-term prospects while maintaining substantial reservations about its risks.Source: FinanceFeeds
