Ethereum staking reached an all-time high of 43.8 million ETH at the end of September 2026, representing 35.9% of the cryptocurrency's total supply, according to a new report from digital asset manager Bitwise. The figures, published on October 20 in Bitwise's fourth-quarter staking report, show that Ethereum recorded net staking inflows of 1.99 million ETH during the third quarter. The increase marked the sixth consecutive quarter of positive staking growth, reinforcing demand for participation in Ethereum's proof-of-stake consensus system despite declining rewards.The milestone means more than one-third of all existing ETH is committed to staking, where participants help validate transactions and secure the blockchain in exchange for protocol rewards. However, rising participation has coincided with lower yields and a reduction in the number of active validator records, highlighting changes in the economics of Ethereum's staking infrastructure.

Staked ETH Rises as Annualized Rewards Decline

Ethereum's staked balance increased from approximately 40.2 million ETH at the end of June to 43.8 million by September 30, based on Bitwise's quarterly reports. The latest report recorded 1.99 million ETH in net staking inflows during the quarter, with the difference between headline balances and net inflows reflecting measurement and reporting distinctions. Across the first nine months of 2026, Ethereum attracted approximately 7.96 million ETH in net staking inflows. The growth occurred even as gross annualized staking yields declined from 2.81% in the second quarter to 2.63% in the third.The 0.18-percentage-point reduction reflects the broader relationship between staking participation and reward distribution. As more ETH participates in consensus, protocol rewards are distributed across a larger amount of staked capital, reducing returns per unit of ETH under otherwise comparable conditions. Ethereum's validator count also declined from approximately 1.1 million to 881,000. Bitwise attributed the decrease primarily to validator consolidation following the Pectra upgrade, which enabled operators to combine validator balances more efficiently. Consequently, fewer validator records do not necessarily indicate that equivalent amounts of ETH have exited staking or that the number of independent operators has fallen proportionally.

Institutional Participation Reshapes Staking Economics

The continued expansion of Ethereum staking reflects growing participation from institutional investors, cryptocurrency investment products and corporate treasury holders. Bitwise's earlier quarterly research identified staking exchange-traded funds and large institutional holders as important contributors to increased deposits during 2026. However, rising staking participation also introduces questions about liquidity, operational concentration and the distribution of network influence. Staked ETH remains subject to Ethereum's withdrawal mechanisms and validator exit queues, meaning the assets are not permanently removed from circulation.Investors also face potential slashing penalties, operational risks and fluctuations in ETH's market value. The report identified similar yield compression across other proof-of-stake networks. Solana ended the third quarter with approximately 69% of its supply staked, while its gross staking yield declined from 6.38% to 5.99%. NEAR recorded a 46% staking ratio and a 4.87% yield, while Hyperliquid had approximately 436 million HYPE staked at a 2.24% yield.Beyond staking, Bitwise highlighted growing blockchain-based financial activity, including $6.93 billion in quarterly tokenized equity trading volume on Solana, an increase of 45%. The figures illustrate a broader shift toward networks supporting greater activity while reducing transaction costs and staking rewards. For Ethereum, the record staking balance strengthens the amount of economic capital participating in network security. Nevertheless, the decline in yields suggests that future staking growth may increasingly depend on institutional demand, operational efficiency and long-term network participation rather than higher reward rates alone.
