In the US, Charges Have Been Filed Against a Suspect in a $53M Pig Butchering Scheme

      • A Vietnamese citizen has been charged with money laundering in connection with a pig butchering scheme.
      • Crypto wallets linked to him received about $53.3 million from fraudulent schemes.
      • One victim transferred about $16 million in cryptocurrency to a fake investment platform.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri has charged 37-year-old Vietnamese citizen Trung Nguyen Van (Trung Nguyen Van) in connection with a large-scale pig butchering cryptocurrency scheme. The U.S. Department of Justice reported this.

The criminal complaint includes two counts related to money laundering. It was unsealed after Van’s initial appearance in federal court in Los Angeles.

According to investigators, from February 2018 to December 2024, crypto wallets linked to the defendant received about $53.28 million in digital assets from fraudulent schemes targeting U.S. citizens. Of that amount, roughly $53.19 million was later transferred to other accounts.

One of the victims was an individual who, from June to August 2024, sent about $16 million in cryptocurrency to what was presented as the Triangle investment platform.

Investigators found that more than $569,000 of these funds went directly to Van’s wallet. After receiving the assets, he allegedly transferred nearly the entire amount to a private non-custodial address, according to the case materials.

Law enforcement also linked funds from other U.S. victims to the defendant’s wallets. In every case, the perpetrators met people online, gained their trust, and persuaded them to invest cryptocurrency through fake investment websites. Users were shown fictitious profits and encouraged to increase their deposits, but they were unable to withdraw their funds.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI. The DOJ emphasized that the charges filed are not evidence of guilt, and the final decision must be made by the court.

Earlier, we reported that U.S. authorities seized $112 million linked to a pig butchering scheme.
