Investor Confidence Wanes as Data Center Bonds Decline Amid AI Industry Concerns

Investor confidence in the ability of the artificial intelligence sector to generate sufficient revenue to support the substantial debts of data centers is diminishing. This shift has resulted in a notable decline in the financing bond prices for several major data center projects in the United States. Bonds associated with the construction of data centers for companies such as Meta, Nvidia, and Oracle have fallen below their par value, with CoreWeave's bonds dropping to under 80 cents on the dollar, indicating distressed bond levels and yields approaching 15%.

The decline in bond prices coincides with significant stock price drops for companies in the sector, including a 17% fall for CoreWeave and an 18% decrease for competitor Nebius. Nvidia has also seen a substantial market value loss of approximately $270 billion in just one week. Ludovic Subran, Chief Investment Officer of Allianz Group, remarked that the data center bond market is experiencing a 'Darwinian moment,' where projects with weaker credit quality are facing increased survival challenges due to power supply issues and construction delays.

Research firm Gartner has raised alarms about the sustainability of the AI industry, predicting that by 2030, 80% of new cloud service providers may struggle to operate independently. The firm estimates that AI data center owners will need to generate $8.5 trillion in revenue by the end of the decade to cover capital and financing costs, while consumer and enterprise spending on AI services is projected to peak at only $3.6 trillion. This discrepancy suggests that over $4 trillion in assets could face impairment risks by 2032. Additionally, regulatory restrictions in various U.S. regions related to water usage, noise, and air pollution are further complicating project timelines, leading to heightened investor caution.
