Moscow Exchange to Launch Bitcoin Spot Trading for Retail Investors on December 1, 2026

The Moscow Exchange (MOEX), Russia's largest stock exchange, will begin offering spot trading of Bitcoin, Ether, and Tether's USDT stablecoin to retail investors starting December 1, 2026. This marks a significant shift from the previous model, where investors could only gain exposure to cryptocurrencies through derivatives without owning the actual assets.

Retail investors will be subject to an annual purchase limit of 300,000 rubles, approximately $3,600, and must pass a knowledge test to participate in trading. In contrast, qualified investors will have no purchase limits and access to a broader range of digital assets beyond the initial three offered to retail participants.

The launch is supported by Federal Law No. 282-FZ, which came into effect on September 1, 2026. MOEX has been testing its trading system with professional market participants since October 1, 2026, in preparation for the official rollout. The exchange will utilize its existing infrastructure for digital asset trading, partnering with digital depositories for settlement processes.

Major Russian banks, including Sberbank and VTB, are also gearing up to provide digital asset services to their clients ahead of the launch. While this initiative aims to bring more transparency to the cryptocurrency market in Russia, analysts suggest that a significant portion of digital asset trading will continue to occur in unregulated environments.
