NVIDIA Will Provide the United Kingdom With $250 Million for AI Safety Research

• NVIDIA will provide the United Kingdom with $250 million worth of computing resources over five years for research into AI safety.

U.S. chipmaker NVIDIA has pledged to provide the United Kingdom with $250 million worth of computing resources over five years. The funds will be directed toward AI safety research, Reuters reports.

The initiative is intended to support the United Kingdom’s ambition to become one of the global hubs for developing standards and assessing AI risks. To that end, the country is using, among other things, the AI Security Institute — one of the first government bodies created to evaluate this technology, the report says.

NVIDIA will fund testing of agentic AI systems

NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang said the United Kingdom will receive $50 million worth of accelerated computing resources each year. They will be used to test the safety of agentic AI systems and develop safeguards for increasingly powerful models.

“AI capabilities and safety must advance together,” Huang said.

According to him, the United Kingdom is turning scientific leadership into practical solutions, and scientific progress — into a future that benefits people.

Attention to AI safety has intensified following reports from developers, including Anthropic and OpenAI, about instances of uncontrolled or undesirable behavior by AI agents. Some industry figures also warn that the technology could pose an existential threat to humanity.

UK AI minister Kanishka Narayan said NVIDIA’s contribution will help ensure the development of safe and trustworthy AI that serves people’s interests.

NVIDIA’s computing resources will support several research tracks in the United Kingdom. Among them is the Oxford University-led BOLD project, which is developing approaches to training, adapting, and operating AI systems alongside humans.

The funding will also cover robotics safety research at Imperial College London and programs at University College London (UCL).

As a reminder, NVIDIA previously unveiled a platform for controlling AI agents.
