OpenAI Reports Lower Than Expected User Engagement with ChatGPT Integration in Apple Products
OpenAI has expressed concerns regarding the integration of its ChatGPT technology into Apple's AI offerings, particularly Apple Intelligence. Recent court documents reported by the Financial Times indicate that the number of new weekly active users has fallen short of expectations, prompting OpenAI to revise its growth forecasts downward. By the summer of 2025, internal assessments at OpenAI suggested that the integration was significantly underperforming.
The documents reveal that ChatGPT is disabled by default in Apple Intelligence, requiring users to actively enable it, which may hinder overall usage rates. While users can access ChatGPT through Siri and Apple's writing tools, the company retains control over how AI features are accessed and utilized. OpenAI had anticipated that the integration would enhance subscription conversions among iPhone users, but actual conversion rates have also been disappointing, with no specific figures on new users or subscriptions disclosed in the documents.
Additionally, this year, Apple has opted to utilize Google Gemini as the foundational model for the latest version of Siri AI. This decision, highlighted in the litigation documents between Apple and OpenAI, underscores the challenges OpenAI faces in its partnership with Apple, reflecting the ongoing legal disputes rather than operational data shared publicly by both companies.
