Russia's Digital Ruble Accounts Exceed 220,000 in First Month

The Bank of Russia has reported that over 220,000 digital ruble accounts were opened within the first month of its launch, significantly surpassing the central bank's initial forecast of 60,000 accounts by the end of the year. This figure was announced on October 6, 2026, following the nationwide rollout that began on September 1, 2026. The rapid adoption comes as BRICS nations, including China and India, explore ways to connect their digital currency systems for enhanced cross-border trade and payments.

Zulfiya Kakhrumanova, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Russia, highlighted the strong uptake during her address at the Fintech X10 forum. The digital ruble, which is now Russia's third official form of currency alongside cash and bank deposits, is issued directly by the Bank of Russia and can be accessed through the mobile apps of participating commercial banks. Payments are primarily facilitated through QR codes, and large retailers and major banks were mandated to support the system from its inception, ensuring immediate usability.

Corporate interest in the digital ruble is also growing, with VTB reporting that over 1,500 corporate clients are prepared to open accounts. Additionally, starting October 1, select employees of the Finance Ministry have the option to receive their salaries in digital rubles, which could further encourage spending in this new currency. Citizens are permitted to maintain a single digital ruble account with a monthly top-up limit of ₽300,000, with no fees for transfers and payments until the end of 2026.

The push for a central bank digital currency (CBDC) in Russia has been accelerated by Western sanctions related to the conflict in Ukraine, aiming to strengthen payment systems with international partners. While the initial account openings are promising, future assessments will focus on transaction volumes and the practical use of these accounts, particularly among corporate clients and in cross-border transactions with other BRICS nations.
