Samsung Electronics to Expand 4-Nanometer Production to Meet HBM4 Demand

Samsung Electronics is set to enhance its production capabilities in response to the growing demand for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) technology. The company is evaluating an expansion of its 4-nanometer process to meet the rising needs for HBM4 base chips, which are essential for high-speed data exchange with artificial intelligence accelerators such as graphics processing units (GPUs).

The HBM4 technology incorporates 10-nanometer 6th generation DRAM core chips alongside the 4-nanometer logic base chips. Unlike its competitor SK Hynix, which utilizes Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC) 12-nanometer process for HBM4, Samsung relies on its proprietary 4-nanometer process, which is currently operating at full capacity. The company has secured orders from clients including Nvidia and Groq for its advanced chips.

Samsung anticipates a significant increase in HBM4 revenue, projecting a more than threefold rise in the third quarter compared to the previous quarter. HBM4 is expected to contribute over 60% of the company's HBM revenue in the latter half of the year. The planned expansion at the P4 facility in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, will primarily focus on producing 1c DRAM for HBM, with a substantial portion of the 4-nanometer capacity dedicated to HBM4 base chips.

In addition to the current expansion, Samsung is exploring the construction of a new 2-nanometer production line for HBM5 technology, which aims to enhance performance through a Gate-All-Around (GAA) structure and increased Through-Silicon Via (TSV) density. Citigroup forecasts that global demand for HBM will reach 75.2 billion gigabits next year, marking a 62% increase year-on-year, while supply is expected to be around 59.4 billion gigabits, indicating a significant supply gap.
