Scammers Drain 274.6 ETH from Crypto Users via Fake AI Trading Tutorials on YouTube

A recent report from blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs reveals that a scam campaign masquerading as AI-powered cryptocurrency trading tutorials has defrauded 224 victims of 274.6 ETH, approximately $517,205, over a six-month period. The findings, published on September 14, 2026, highlight a sophisticated social engineering attack that utilized AI-generated hosts on YouTube to mislead users into deploying malicious smart contracts.

Between February 12 and August 11, 2026, nine similar YouTube tutorials featured AI virtual presenters who guided viewers through the process of using a purportedly autonomous crypto arbitrage bot. These tutorials falsely claimed to be powered by Anthropic's Claude AI, lending an air of legitimacy to the scam. Victims were instructed to deploy a smart contract on the Ethereum blockchain and fund it with 1 to 2 ETH, believing they were activating a legitimate trading strategy. Instead, the contracts contained hidden code that redirected their funds to addresses controlled by the scammers.

This attack stands out because victims willingly initiated every transaction, deploying the contracts from their own wallets. Traditional phishing defenses were ineffective, as the interactions appeared legitimate to on-chain monitoring tools. TRM Labs noted that the stolen ETH was laundered exclusively through decentralized finance protocols and mixers, complicating recovery efforts for the victims.

The use of a well-known AI brand in the scam underscores a growing trend in AI-enabled fraud, where scammers leverage the credibility of established companies to enhance their schemes. While the total amount stolen may seem small compared to larger heists, the median loss of 1 ETH per victim indicates that the campaign specifically targeted retail users seeking to explore crypto trading strategies.
