September Quadruple Witching Event Reaches $7 Trillion

On September 18, 2026, approximately $7 trillion worth of stock index futures, stock index options, and single-stock options expired simultaneously, marking the second-largest quadruple witching event in market history. This figure is comparable to the combined GDP of Japan and India, highlighting the significant scale of this market occurrence. The only larger events occurred earlier in 2026, with March's expiration at around $7.1 trillion and June's approaching $7.7 trillion.

Quadruple witching occurs four times a year, specifically on the third Friday of March, June, September, and December. It involves the simultaneous expiration of four types of derivative contracts, which often leads to increased trading volume, particularly during the final hour of trading, known as the 'witching hour.' This September's event was primarily facilitated by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) for index futures and the Cboe for options trading, both of which are key players in the U.S. derivatives market.

The timing of this quad-witching event coincided with a significant monetary policy shift, as the Federal Reserve raised its target interest rate by 25 basis points to a range of 3.75%-4.00% on September 16, marking its first rate hike in over three years. This decision contributed to heightened market volatility, as traders adjusted their positions in anticipation of the Fed's actions. Pre-event estimates indicated that U.S. options exposure was around $6.2 trillion at the end of August, suggesting a notable increase in positioning leading up to the expiration date.
