Zcash Activates NU7 Network Upgrade on Testnet
Zcash has successfully activated its NU7 network upgrade on the public testnet at block height 4,465,026, marking a significant overhaul of the privacy coin's protocol. This upgrade is designed to enhance transaction speed, reduce block times from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, and implement a new fee-recycling mechanism aimed at ensuring the network's sustainability.
The NU7 upgrade introduces the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM), which allocates 60% of transaction fees to support the network's longevity. Additionally, it will retire the Sprout shielded pool, disabling version 4 transactions, while not introducing any new transaction formats. The upgrade is being rolled out through Zebra 7.0.0-rc.0, a release candidate of the Zebra node software, which was released on October 2, 2026.
The timeline for the mainnet activation is set, with a decision scheduled for October 20, 2026, and a target activation date of November 5, 2026. Infrastructure providers, including QuickNode, are preparing for the necessary updates to ensure compatibility with the new features. Several organizations, including the Zcash Foundation and Project Tachyon, collaborated on this upgrade, reaching a unanimous agreement after consulting with coinholders.
