S&P Global Ratings Introduces Risk Assessment Framework for Onchain Lending Vaults
On October 4, 2026, S&P Global Ratings unveiled a new framework designed to assess the risks associated with onchain lending vaults, known as the Vault Risk Assessment (VRA). This framework aims to provide investors with insights into the likelihood of impairment to their positions within these crypto lending structures.
The VRA evaluates vaults that pool digital assets and direct them into blockchain-based lending markets. It encompasses vaults that utilize digital assets backed by cryptocurrencies or tokenized real-world assets, while excluding those with direct exposure to tokenized bonds. The assessment is forward-looking, focusing on potential future impairments rather than historical performance.
S&P's evaluation is based on four key factors: portfolio quality, liquidity pressures, protocol risks, and curator oversight. These factors help determine the overall risk associated with a vault's operations. Notably, the VRA employs a grading scale that includes a 'v' suffix, with the highest score being AAA(v), indicating minimal impairment risk. However, S&P emphasizes that this framework is not a credit rating, aiming to clarify the distinction between risk assessment and creditworthiness.
The introduction of the VRA provides a public checklist for vault operators and curators, encouraging them to adopt practices that enhance their risk profiles. As the principles outlined in the VRA gain traction, they may serve as benchmarks for other financial instruments utilizing decentralized finance (DeFi) assets, although S&P warns against misinterpreting high grades as guarantees of safety.
