Stormrake Reports $8 Million in Blocked Payments Due to Debanking in Australia

Stormrake, a Bitcoin brokerage based in Melbourne, Australia, has reported approximately $8 million in blocked or delayed payments during January and February of 2026. The company attributes these disruptions to debanking practices by major Australian banks, which have tightened access to banking services for cryptocurrency businesses.

The impact of these banking restrictions extends beyond Stormrake, with estimates suggesting that the total blocked payments across the industry could exceed $50 million during the same period. These transactions include a wide range of amounts, from small payments to individual transactions exceeding $750,000.

Bisher Khudeira, a director at Stormrake, emphasized that debanking is the primary obstacle to Bitcoin adoption in Australia. He criticized the actions of banks such as Commonwealth Bank, Macquarie, and Westpac, which have cited fraud risk and anti-money laundering compliance as reasons for their restrictions. Despite guidance from AUSTRAC, Australia's financial intelligence agency, recommending against sector-wide debanking, many Bitcoin firms continue to face challenges in maintaining banking relationships.

In response to these challenges, companies like Stormrake are adapting by offering compliant products, such as self-custody options that allow customers to hold their own Bitcoin. Other firms are considering overseas expansion or enhancing compliance measures to better align with banking partners. The ongoing situation highlights the significant barriers facing the cryptocurrency sector in Australia.
