Tether Backs Stablecoin Payments Across 17 Countries

Tether invested in EFY Finance through the company's seed round, the stablecoin issuer announced on 13 October. The deal backs a platform that settles USDT and USAT payments to local accounts in 17 countries.EFY has more than 25,000 active individual and business accounts, with conversion services spanning more than 12 currencies and payment corridors. However, the investment amount was not disclosed.

      EFY's Reach Across Latin America

EFY Finance operates stablecoin payments, custody, digital wallets, payment cards, over-the-counter (OTC) trading, and fiat-to-stablecoin conversion services. The company holds a Digital Asset Service Provider (DASP) license in El Salvador and runs established operations in Bolivia, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, and Ecuador. Tether's backing arrives as stablecoin adoption accelerates across the region. A Chainalysis study published in October 2025 estimated nearly $1.5 trillion in crypto transaction volume across Latin America between July 2022 and June 2025. Brazil led with $318.8 billion in value received, followed by Argentina at $93.9 billion and Mexico at $71.2 billion.Stablecoins accounted for more than half of exchange purchases involving the Colombian peso, Argentine peso, and Brazilian real between July 2024 and June 2025, the study found. Bolivia's virtual-asset transactions reached $430 million in the 12 months after the country lifted crypto restrictions in June 2024.

What Tether and EFY See in the Region

EFY co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Andres Tobon said the company's priority is connecting digital currencies with the banking systems businesses already use, linking stablecoins to local accounts, cards, and cross-border settlement, according to the announcement. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said inflation and capital controls are reasons some Latin American customers seek dollar-backed assets, and that EFY is positioned to improve access through regulated infrastructure and existing financial networks. The investment follows several Tether commitments across the region. The company put $20 million into Argentine digital bank Uala in July 2026 as part of a $197 million financing round. It also committed $20 million to Brazil's Mercado Bitcoin, a platform with 4.5 million users, for tokenization and payments.

Where EFY Fits in Tether's LATAM Playbook

EFY joins a series of Tether investments in the region, including Adecoagro in April 2025, Parfin in November 2025, and Mercado Bitcoin and Uala in July 2026.These investments span agricultural commodities, consumer banking, digital-asset infrastructure, and institutional stablecoin adoption. Tether's backing of EFY adds another payments and settlement platform to its regional portfolio, although the investments alone do not establish that the company is building a vertically integrated corridor.USAT, the stablecoin issued by Anchorage Digital Bank, N.A. with Tether's support, also featured in the EFY arrangement. Anchorage selected LayerZero as an interoperability provider for USAT in September 2026, giving the token cross-chain reach that could widen EFY's settlement options for institutional clients.

Stablecoin Adoption Gains Ground as Europe Tightens Rules

Bitso reported in its 2025 adoption survey that dollar-backed tokens accounted for 40% of crypto purchases on its platform, compared with 18% for Bitcoin. A Hyundai Motor pilot in July 2026 transferred $20,000 in USDT over the Avalanche blockchain and settled in roughly seven minutes, demonstrating the speed advantage driving corporate interest. In Europe, Tether faces a different trajectory. The company has not sought Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) authorization for USDT, and Coinbase, Kraken, and Crypto.com have restricted or delisted the token for European users.

EFY's Expansion Plans and USAT Integration Remain Unclear

The 17 countries in EFY's settlement network were not individually named beyond six established markets. Traders will watch for details on which additional jurisdictions are included and whether the USAT integration opens a regulated on-ramp for institutional capital moving into Latin American stablecoin corridors.
