U.S. Real Interest Rates Reach Highest Level Since 2008, Impacting Cryptocurrency Markets
The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury bond has increased by 47 basis points since August 31, with 43 basis points attributed to a rise in real yields. This surge has pushed the 10-year real yield to 2.95%, marking the highest level since 2008. The inflation breakeven rate, however, has only seen a modest increase of 4 basis points during the same period.
In the wake of the interest rate hike in September, major cryptocurrencies have shown varied performance. Bitcoin (BTC) has risen by 9.3%, while Ethereum (ETH) has increased by 2.7%. Layer 2 tokens, real-world asset (RWA) tokens, and artificial intelligence (AI) tokens have experienced significant gains of approximately 32%, 29%, and 29%, respectively. In contrast, meme and payment tokens have not performed as well.
Binance Research highlights that the current high real interest rates continue to exert a suppressive effect on a broad range of risk assets. As the market adjusts, future attention is expected to focus on key indicators such as the Consumer Price Index (CPI), long-term U.S. Treasury yields, and the flow of funds into Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
