Visa and Mastercard Launch OUSD Stablecoin with Major Partners

Visa and Mastercard have officially launched OUSD (Open USD), a dollar-pegged stablecoin, as founding partners of Open Standard. The stablecoin went live on September 30, 2026, and is backed by over $1 billion in liquidity commitments from its founding partners, which also include Coinbase, Stripe, and Shopify. This initiative represents a significant shift in the financial landscape, as it could potentially disrupt the traditional payment processing model that Visa and Mastercard have dominated for decades.

OUSD operates on four blockchains—Ethereum, Solana, Base, and Tempo—allowing businesses to mint and redeem the stablecoin at a 1:1 ratio against US dollars without any fees or volume limits. The reserves backing OUSD are managed by major financial institutions, including BlackRock and BNY Mellon, with monthly attestations published to ensure transparency regarding the reserves.

The launch of OUSD comes at a time when the stablecoin market is already crowded, with a total supply exceeding $300 billion, primarily led by Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC. However, OUSD aims to differentiate itself through its unique yield-sharing model, which allows partners to share in the earnings generated from reserves, potentially incentivizing businesses to adopt it over competitors that retain reserve income. With over 200 partners at launch, including major financial firms, OUSD is positioned to leverage the extensive networks of its founding partners to gain traction in the market.
