World’s First AI Actress Malfunctioned Live on Air

• The first AI actress, Tilly Norwood, gave an interview.
• During the broadcast, she suddenly started speaking Chinese.
• After the incident, Norwood explained the unexpected slip by saying her “wires got a little crossed.”

AI actress Tilly Norwood, whom her creators call the world’s first, gave an interview with Piers Morgan and British actor Tom Conti, during which she suddenly switched from English to Chinese. The glitch happened in response to Conti’s question about whether the other cast members in her debut film Misaligned were humans or digital characters. 

Norwood was created by the London companies Particle6 and its AI division, Xicoia, and the project is already sparking controversy over using AI instead of people in film.

The character debuted at the Zurich Film Festival in 2025 and landed a role in Misaligned, a film about an artificial being that develops human desires under the influence of an out-of-control bot.

AI “Actress” Glitches Live on Air

During the interview, Conti asked Norwood whether the other actors in Misaligned were humans or digital characters. She initially answered in English, but mid-response she switched to Chinese for a few seconds, before returning to English.

Piers Morgan pointed out the glitch, and Norwood explained it as a technical error:

“Sometimes my wires get a bit crossed. That was a bit of a curveball even for me. It’s usually a pretty smooth ride, but sometimes these things happen.”

Norwood’s X account decided to play up the incident in a promotional style:

“You try speaking 30+ languages and see if you don’t show off occasionally.”

The Acting Industry Criticizes an AI Character

Norwood’s emergence has already drawn criticism from the SAG-AFTRA union. The organization said that a digital character is not an actor, because it was created using a computer program trained on the work of professional performers without their consent or compensation.

“Additionally, signatory producers should be aware that they may not use synthetic performers without complying with our contractual obligations, which require notice and bargaining whenever a synthetic performer is going to be used,” SAG-AFTRA noted.

Earlier, screenwriter and Particle6 studio founder Elin van der Velden called Norwood a work of art, not a replacement for a human. Meanwhile, actress Emily Blunt urged talent agencies not to work with the project.

“I don’t know how to [talk about it] other than to say how terrifying this is. Are you serious? That’s an AI? Good Lord, we’re screwed. That is really, really scary, Come on, agencies, don’t do that. Please stop. Please stop taking away our human connection,” Blunt said.

The Norwood incident comes amid the broader spread of AI in media and entertainment. In particular, top YouTube creator MrBeast entered into a multi-year partnership with Google to use Gemini in video production, and Hollywood actress Gal Gadot supported the use of AI to create sets and lighting in filmmaking, while also advocating for protecting acting from technological interference.
