Abu Dhabi invests $80m in public transport technology

Abu Dhabi is investing around AED300 million ($80 million) to upgrade the technology used to manage its public transport network and collect fares.

The project will introduce real-time monitoring of buses and journeys across the UAE capital, as well as a new fare system allowing passengers to pay using bank cards, digitally or with QR codes.

The Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), an affiliate of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, will manage implementation of the upgrade, the state-owned Abu Dhabi Media Office said in a statement.

The contract has been awarded to France’s Conduent Business Solutions, the statement said.

Abu Dhabi’s population has continued to grow, with official data putting the number at 4 million in 2024, up 7.5 percent year on year.

The emirate’s public bus network carried more than 112 million passengers last year across 174 routes, using a fleet of more than 800 vehicles, according to Abu Dhabi Mobility.

Abu Dhabi Mobility announced in June it was working with Emirati smart mobility company Lumo on what it described as the first trial of an autonomous public bus in the Middle East and North Africa. The initiative is part of a wider strategy for smart and autonomous transport to account for a quarter of all journeys in the emirate by 2040.
