Australia's Jobless Rate Rises to 4.6% Despite Strong Employment Growth

Australia's labor market added 39,500 jobs in August, significantly exceeding the expected gain of 20,000, according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). This increase followed a decline of 15,800 jobs in July. However, the unemployment rate rose to 4.6%, the highest level since late 2021, as a surge in the participation rate to 67.1% outpaced job creation. Full-time employment fell by 6,300 positions, while part-time roles increased by 45,800, indicating a shift in the nature of job growth.

The rise in the unemployment rate was unexpected, as economists had anticipated it would remain stable at 4.5%. The unrounded jobless rate was approximately 4.65%, close to rounding up to 4.7%. Despite the increase in unemployment, the labor market showed signs of resilience, with hours worked rising by 0.7% and underemployment easing to 6.2%.

The ABS cautioned that a change in survey methodology could affect the interpretation of the data, particularly regarding seasonal adjustments. Analysts noted that the increase in unemployment was driven by more Australians entering the workforce rather than job losses, suggesting that the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) may maintain its focus on inflation in light of these developments. Following the report, the Australian dollar remained stable against the US dollar, and the ASX 200 index showed only a partial recovery from earlier losses.
