Australia's September Employment Data Expected to Show 20,000 Job Gains

National Australia Bank (NAB) forecasts that Australia's employment figures for September will indicate an increase of 20,000 jobs, with the unemployment rate remaining steady at 4.6%. This prediction aligns with expectations from Westpac and market consensus, while Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) anticipates a more modest gain of approximately 10,000 jobs. The employment data is scheduled to be released at 11:30 AM Sydney time on Thursday, which corresponds to 0030 GMT and 8:30 PM US Eastern time on Wednesday.

A stable unemployment rate of 4.6% would position it slightly above the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) forecast of 4.5% for the fourth quarter. NAB suggests that this discrepancy is unlikely to significantly alter the RBA's perspective on the labor market unless there are consistent upward surprises in unemployment figures leading into the end of the year. The bank attributes much of the recent cooling in the labor market to an increase in workforce participation rather than a decline in hiring activity, indicating that demand for labor remains robust.

NAB also noted that the spike in unemployment observed in August may have been influenced by statistical anomalies and changes in methodology by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. These factors could lead to a correction in the unemployment rate this month. However, two considerations prevent NAB from adopting a 4.5% unemployment rate as its base case: the rotation of a survey group with a notably low unemployment rate and the rounding of August's rate, which was approximately 4.65%. This suggests that the reported rate could decrease significantly while still being recorded as 4.6%.
