Chicago Fed President Goolsbee Calls Recent CPI Data Discouraging

Auston Goolsbee, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, described the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data as discouraging, emphasizing that if current inflation levels persist, the Federal Reserve will need to adjust its monetary policy. He noted that there is growing evidence suggesting inflation is not merely transitory, as the economy continues to face various shocks. Goolsbee highlighted service sector inflation as a particular concern and expressed hope that energy prices would soon ease in the inflation data.

Goolsbee stated that the Fed must prevent overheating in the economy, especially when both inflation and economic activity are strong. He indicated that discussions with contacts reveal a focus on costs and prices rather than recession fears. Compared to other Federal Reserve officials, Goolsbee expressed a more optimistic outlook, although he acknowledged the need for vigilance regarding inflation trends.

On the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) investment, Goolsbee warned that excessive hype could lead to increased investment in the tech sector, which might risk overheating the economy. He clarified that a slowdown in AI investment does not necessarily indicate an impending recession. Goolsbee also mentioned that he prefers not to signal future policy moves ahead of Federal Reserve meetings, maintaining flexibility in the Fed's approach to monetary policy. Following the CPI report, market expectations indicate a 40% chance of an interest rate hike later this month.
