U.S. Deploys Troops to Latin America to Combat Drug Cartels

The Pentagon has announced the deployment of approximately 600 soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division to Latin America as part of an expanded military campaign against drug cartels. Initial deployments will take place in Panama, with subsequent training operations planned in Colombia and Honduras, where the troops may assist U.S. Special Operations forces.

In addition to troop deployments, the United States is establishing a new military command for the Western Hemisphere in Miami. The U.S. has also moved MQ-9 Reaper drones into the region to enhance its operational capabilities against drug trafficking organizations.

U.S. officials are contemplating a shift in strategy that could expand counter-cartel operations from maritime strikes to land-based engagements. This potential escalation raises concerns regarding the risk of military confrontation and the possibility of civilian casualties in the affected areas.
