US Inflation Data Influences Market Dynamics

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the United States in September rose to 3.7%, exceeding the expected 3.6%. This unexpected increase has intensified discussions regarding potential interest rate adjustments by the Federal Reserve, particularly as the central bank approaches its blackout period before the next policy meeting. Market expectations for a rate hike in October have fluctuated, currently sitting at 37% after briefly surpassing 50% following the CPI announcement.

In response to the CPI data, the U.S. dollar strengthened while stock markets experienced declines, with the S&P 500 falling by 1.2%. Precious metals also saw a downturn, with gold prices dropping by $54 to $4,103. Treasury yields displayed volatility, with the 2-year yield initially rising to 4.95% before settling at 4.81%, indicating that the market may not anticipate significant changes in Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) policy.

In Canada, building permits for August increased by 8.8%, significantly higher than the expected 2.0%. The Federal Reserve's Beige Book reported growth in nine of its twelve districts, although price pressures are becoming more widespread. Comments from Fed official Austan Goolsbee suggested that continued poor inflation data would be unacceptable, highlighting the ongoing challenges the central bank faces in managing inflation.
