Backpack Eyes Massive Expansion: 10,000 Tokenized Stocks on Solana

      Key Takeaways

      • Backpack’s CEO Armani Ferrante has announced plans to scale tokenized stock offerings on Solana from roughly 200 to 10,000 symbols.
      • The proposed system would enable seamless movement of shares between traditional brokerage accounts and decentralized finance applications via a unified API.
      • Neither a specific rollout timeline nor a prioritized list of stocks has been disclosed.
      • On September 17, the SEC issued conditional relief allowing tokenized securities trading for qualifying platforms, subject to strict requirements.
      • The SEC has not publicly identified Backpack as an approved venue under this recent exemption framework.

Armani Ferrante, CEO of Backpack, has unveiled an ambitious strategy to dramatically scale tokenized stock availability on the Solana blockchain. The platform presently supports approximately 200 stock symbols, but Ferrante aims to expand this to 10,000.

The revelation emerged via a video segment posted by Solana’s official account on September 26. During the presentation, Ferrante articulated his vision to democratize stock market access through blockchain infrastructure.

“Not 10 stocks, not 100 stocks. We want to bring the entire stock market to Solana,” Ferrante stated.

He outlined a framework enabling actual shares to transition seamlessly from traditional brokerage platforms into decentralized finance ecosystems and back. This interoperability would function through a single application programming interface. Ferrante characterized the expansion from 200 to 10,000 symbols as “the next leap” for the platform.

Details regarding a specific launch timeline remain undisclosed. Additionally, the company has not revealed which securities will receive priority in the rollout.

      Understanding Backpack’s Infrastructure

Backpack launched its securities offering in June. The platform enables clients to maintain positions in U.S. equities and exchange-traded funds through its brokerage service. Customers can subsequently transform eligible positions into blockchain-based token equivalents.

When users deposit a supported token back through Backpack Exchange, it reconverts into a standard security. According to Backpack, brokerage-held assets comply with New York’s Uniform Commercial Code Article 8. The platform claims to facilitate dividends, corporate actions, and transfers using conventional brokerage infrastructure including ACATS.

These tokens reside on Solana in compatible digital wallets. Holders can transmit them peer-to-peer. According to Backpack, the tokens may also be deployed within DeFi protocols, subject to individual platform guidelines.

Backpack’s inaugural tokenized offering represented SpaceX, rolled out in June through a collaboration with Sunrise. Subsequently, the company introduced tokens representing additional firms such as Micron and SanDisk. A CoreWeave-linked token joined the roster in September.

      Examining Token Holder Entitlements

A distinction exists between holding a conventional brokerage share and possessing its tokenized counterpart, despite Backpack’s assertion of one-to-one convertibility. Regarding its Micron offering, Backpack specifies that traditional brokerage shareholders receive cash dividends through standard channels.

Token holders, conversely, receive dividends reinvested as additional tokens. Corporate actions are reflected through token balance modifications.

The SEC has cautioned that tokenized securities vary significantly in structure. In a statement issued in January, the regulator emphasized that token-associated rights depend on underlying architecture. Some tokens represent claims on actual shares maintained in custody arrangements. Others establish fundamentally different legal relationships.

On September 17, the SEC established a five-year conditional framework permitting qualified platforms to facilitate tokenized stock trading under designated parameters. Platforms must verify that token holders receive equivalent rights to conventional shareholders. Trading must suspend if the underlying security experiences a trading halt.

The SEC has not publicly designated Backpack as an approved platform under this exemption. Backpack recently appointed Kyle Samani, previously with Multicoin Capital, to its U.S. board. No schedule has been announced for expanding domestic stock services.
