Bangladesh Orders 11 More Boeing Jets to Strengthen US Trade Relations

Bangladesh has announced an order for 11 additional Boeing aircraft, expanding the total planned orders for Biman Bangladesh Airlines to 25 jets. This latest order includes five 787-10 Dreamliners and six 737-8 jets, with the signing of the agreement set to take place in New York. The U.S. ambassador to Bangladesh, Brent Christensen, confirmed the purchase, highlighting its significance for both nations' relationship.

The new order follows a previous agreement made in April worth approximately $3.7 billion for 14 Boeing aircraft, consisting of 10 Dreamliners and four 737 MAX 8 jets, with deliveries scheduled between 2031 and 2035. This initiative is part of Bangladesh's strategy to enhance imports from the United States, aiming to reduce a trade deficit of around $6 billion and mitigate the risk of tariffs that could adversely affect its garment export sector, which is vital to the country's economy.

The purchase underscores the role of aircraft acquisitions as a diplomatic tool, as Bangladesh seeks to demonstrate goodwill towards the U.S. while addressing trade imbalances. Additionally, Airbus remains a competitor, with a technical committee in Bangladesh reviewing a proposal for 10 of its aircraft, indicating that the country is balancing its fleet needs with its diplomatic objectives.
