People's Bank of China Expected to Set USD/CNY Reference Rate at 6.7184

The People's Bank of China (PBOC) is anticipated to set the daily USD/CNY reference rate at 6.7184, a significant indicator in Asian foreign exchange markets. This fixing mechanism has gained importance recently as the PBOC has shifted its approach from restraining the yuan's rise to allowing for gradual appreciation. Throughout September, the midpoint has strengthened for eight consecutive sessions, marking the longest streak since 2023, and reaching its strongest level since February 2023.

For nearly a year, the PBOC had been setting the fixing weaker than market expectations, a strategy interpreted by traders as an effort to slow the yuan's appreciation. The gap between the fixing and market estimates reached its widest since February in late August, shortly after the yuan hit a three-and-a-half-year high against the US dollar. However, the recent trend indicates a loosening of this resistance, with the midpoint now narrowing its gap with market expectations.

China operates a managed floating exchange rate system, allowing the yuan to trade within a band of plus or minus 2% around the daily midpoint. This midpoint reflects various factors, including the previous day's closing price, movements in major currencies, and domestic economic conditions. The PBOC retains discretion over the final fixing, which serves as a policy signal to the market. A stronger-than-expected fixing typically indicates a stance against depreciation, while a weaker fixing suggests tolerance for a softer currency.
