Bank of Canada Governor Discusses Inflation and Monetary Policy Outlook

Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem addressed inflation risks and the future of monetary policy following the central bank's recent rate decision. He emphasized that inflation remains too high, particularly driven by rising gasoline and oil prices. Macklem indicated that the situation in the Middle East could further influence oil prices, which are critical to the inflation outlook.

Macklem noted that the central bank is prepared to adjust monetary policy as necessary, guided by inflation forecasts and associated risks. He acknowledged that the recent fluctuations in global bond yields are affecting Canada, and the central bank's tolerance for higher inflation is limited. The USDCAD currency pair has seen the Canadian dollar strengthen against the US dollar, influenced by Macklem's comments on inflation risks, which may lead traders to anticipate higher Canadian interest rates for an extended period.

The governor also highlighted the importance of the 200-day moving average for the USDCAD, currently at 1.3839, as a key support level. Traders are closely monitoring this level, as a sustained break below it could indicate a loss of buyer support, while a rebound could signal renewed buying interest. Macklem suggested that multiple rate increases might be necessary if inflation continues to pose a significant challenge.
