Geopolitical Tensions Impact Oil Prices and Trade Relations

Recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have led to significant developments in oil prices and international trade. The U.S. Central Command reported that American forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers in response to a ballistic missile attack on a U.S. aircraft carrier. This escalation follows an earlier incident on September 5, where three tankers were struck. Iran retaliated by launching missiles at a U.S. base in Jordan, with Jordanian air defenses intercepting the majority of the missiles, resulting in no reported casualties.

In the context of these tensions, South Korea's KOSPI index rose by 2%, buoyed by optimism in artificial intelligence and semiconductor stocks, despite a generally weak performance from U.S. markets. Meanwhile, China's inflation data for August showed a year-on-year increase of 0.8% in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and a 3.8% rise in the Producer Price Index (PPI), both exceeding expectations. However, economists warn that this rebound is driven by rising energy costs rather than a genuine recovery in domestic demand, as the country continues to face challenges from a housing-led slowdown.

On the trade front, the U.S. has escalated its trade dispute with Canada by banning a range of Canadian imports, including alcoholic beverages and dairy products, effective September 29. This move follows Canada's implementation of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods. The currency markets have remained relatively stable, with the USD/CAD exchange rate showing little change as traders await upcoming U.S. inflation data, which is expected to be a key market driver.
